When a client assigns you to a matter for billing, the matter appears in CounselGO. For more information about the Referred Matters page, click here.
To view a matter record, go to Matters from the navigation bar on the left and then click on a row to open the record.
TIP: You can also search for the matter by typing part of the Client Matter ID or matter name in the search box.
The matter record appears as follows with tabs that separate relevant information. Which tabs are displayed depend on your client's settings and your user permissions.
Attributes
The Attributes tab displays general information, such as the name and Client Matter ID.
Name |
Name given to the matter by the client. |
Description | Client's description of the matter, if provided. |
Client Matter ID | Unique ID generated by SimpleLegal to associate incoming invoices to the appropriate matter. Client Matter IDs are case sensitive. |
Open Date |
Date the matter was set to "Open" status by the client in SimpleLegal. |
Close Date | Date the matter was set to "Closed" status by the client in SimpleLegal. This displays N/A if the matter is still open. |
Bill Legal Entity |
Client entity designated to incur debt. This displays N/A if the client has not specified a Bill Legal Entity. |
Legal Entity Address |
Address of the Bill Legal Entity, if provided by the client. |
Budgets
The Budgets tab displays any budget proposals that have been approved by the client for the matter. This only applies if the client is using the Budget Requests / Proposal feature.
You can click on a budget from the list to view additional details. For more information about budgets in CounselGO, click here.
Invoices
The Invoices tab displays all invoices that have been submitted against the matter to date.
See the table below for descriptions of information displayed for invoices.
Originator |
Initials of the CounselGO user who submitted the invoice. |
Date | Date of the invoice. |
Number | Invoice number provided by the CounselGO user. |
Subject | Description entered for the invoice by the CounselGO user. |
Currency | Currency in which the invoice was submitted. |
Total | Total of the invoice. |
Status |
Whether an invoice is in Received, On Hold, Approved, Paid, or Rejected status. |
Reason |
If an invoice is rejected or adjusted, it displays a comment icon. Clicking on the icon shows a preview of the reasons/notes provided by the reviewer. |
Status Date |
Date the invoice was set to its current status. |

Files
The Files tab only appears if you have been granted Matter File Sharing role for the client you are currently viewing in CounselGO. This can be granted by your client or a CounselGO Admin from your firm. For additional information about Matter File Sharing, click here.
This tab is separated into three sections:
- Shared By Us: Displays matter files shared by all users from your firm who have access to the matter. You can click under Actions to download, rename, or delete a matter file.
- Shared With Me: Displays matter files that were shared with you directly by the client. You can click under Actions to download the file.
- Quarantined: Displays any uploaded matter files that did not pass the CounselGO virus scan.
Updates
The Updates tab only appears if you have been assigned the Matter Updates role for the client you are currently viewing in CounselGO. This can be granted by your client or a CounselGO Admin from your firm. For additional information about Matter Updates, click here.
From here, you can review any matter-specific updates shared by the client or other users from your firm, as well as add your own using the text editor at the bottom page.
